New Cuyama is a small town of under 600 people in the high desert region of California, developed by ARCO in the 1950s after oil was discovered in the region. I first came across New Cuyama on month-long road trip as an last-minute pit-stop between San Diego and San Francisco. One small business in town, The Blue Sky Center, and also provides workspace to several local artists, such as Alex Guerrero, who restores old “woody wagons.” I was in awe of this small hidden town and it’s history, and I ended up coming back a few years later to do an art residency.
